Schedule of Events

Here is the Schedule of Events for the 2016 World Championship Old­-time Piano Playing Contest and Festival. All competitions, workshops, shows, and concerts take place at Nutt Auditorium in the Music Building on the campus of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in Oxford, MS. The Silent Movie Box Lunch and Grand Old Flag Brunch are in the Band Hall. The Tune–Ups, Bus Tour Luncheon, Dinner with the Champion, and Ring of Ragtime are located around the courthouse square.

  • Thursday, May 26th

    • 8:00pm
      Tune-Ups Party at Proud Larry’s
      Join us at Proud Larry’s, one of Oxford’s premiere music establishments as contestants and guests warm up for the weekend competition.
  • Friday, May 27th

    • 6:00am
      Continental Breakfast
      For guests staying at the Holiday Inn, our headquarters hotel. Open until 8:00am.
    • 10:00am
      Bus Tour & Musical Luncheon
      Enjoy a narrated double­-decker bus tour through historic Oxford, a guided tour of the home of author William Faulkner, ending at Locals restaurant on the historic Oxford square with live piano entertainment.
    • 2:00pm
      Reception Desk Opens
      Contest reception desk opens in the music building on the campus of Ole Miss for tickets purchased on­line and T­-shirt orders.
    • 3:00pm
      Music Workshop
      Workshop with three­-time world champ Brian Holland. This hour­long session takes place in Nutt Auditorium in the Music Building.
    • 4:30pm
      New Rag Contest
      Up to ten composers write their own tunes for this event. Takes place in Nutt Auditorium.
    • 6:00pm
      Piano Duet Contest
      The audience judges this event during which pairs of piano players compete for the best duo. Takes place in Nutt Auditorium.
    • 8:00pm
      Ring of Ragtime
      Takes place in establishments around the Square: Locals, Frank & Marlee’s, and Shelter. Patrons stay situated at one venue while pianists rotate throughout the evening. Enjoy dinner and a drink while piano players come to entertain you.
  • Saturday, May 28th

    • 6:00am
      Continental Breakfast
      For guests staying at the Holiday Inn, our headquarters hotel. Open until 8:00am.
    • 7:30am
      Meeting for Contestants
      Contestants learn the rules and draw for order of play in Junior and Regular Divisions.
    • 9:00am
      Preliminary Eliminations
      Junior and Regular Division contestants compete in order drawn throughout the day. Usually ends by about 5pm with crowning of junior champ and announcement of those advancing to the Semi­-Finals in the Regular Division. Takes place in Nutt Auditorium.
    • 11:45am
      Silent Movie Luncheon
      Silent Movie Box Lunch in Music Building Band Hall. Watch two 20­-minute silent movies with live piano accompaniment by four­-time champ Adam Swanson.
    • 5:30pm
      Dinner with the Champion
      Enjoy dinner with live piano starring Adam Swanson, 2015 champion and whomever else he asks to play. Takes place at Soulshine Pizza Factory.
    • 7:00pm
      World’s Greatest Sing-along Show
      We have our own song books, and the featured entertainers are Sue Keller and Brian Holland, playing individually and together. Bring along your instrument to join the Old-Time Orchestry.
    • 9:00pm
      Afterglow Parties
      Parties with live music at establishments around the square.
  • Sunday, May 29th

    • 6:00am
      Continental Breakfast
      For guests staying at the Holiday Inn, our headquarters hotel. Open until 8:00am.
    • 9:00am
      Music Workshop
      Workshop with Sue Keller. This hour­-long session takes place in Nutt Auditorium in the Music Building.
    • 10:30am
      Cutting Contest
      Takes place with up to 20 players competing for fame and a cash prize, an event judged by the audience.
    • 1:00pm
      Semi-Finals and Finals
      The Semi­-Finals will narrow the Top Ten players to the Final Five, who play another round to determine the champion for 2016.
    • 7:00pm
      “Blind Boy” Paxton Concert
      Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton: “Easily the most talented young acoustic bluesman to come along in many, many years.” – Living Blues Magazine
    • 9:00pm
      Post-Concert Reception at The White House
      Join us for drinks and snacks at The White House, one of Oxford’s historic antebellum estates ca. 1885 for a catered reception and music with our guest artist and competitors.

      Grand Old Flag Brunch
      Brunch with live music in the Music Building Band Hall.
